Manfreight Trials Scania CNG Demonstrator in Push for Greener Logistics
Manfreight has launched a five-week trial of a Scania CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) demonstrator vehicle, reinforcing the company’s commitment to pioneering sustainable transport solutions. The CNG R460 Scania tractor unit (Registration: UK13 CNG) hit the road on Monday, 9th December 2024, operating on regular routes to provide critical insights into its performance under real-world logistics conditions.
With a driving range of approximately 360 miles per fill, the vehicle has been rigorously tested for both fuel efficiency and carbon emission reductions in comparison to traditional diesel counterparts. The findings will help inform Manfreight’s broader strategy on the future integration of alternative fuel technologies into its fleet.
This latest initiative reflects Manfreight’s proactive approach to innovation and sustainability. In addition to the current trial, the company is also on the waiting list to evaluate Scania’s upcoming 6x2 CNG tractor unit, further demonstrating its readiness to invest in next-generation transport solutions.
As the trial progresses, emissions and performance data will be carefully reviewed to assess the long-term viability of CNG vehicles within Manfreight’s fleet, aligning with its overarching goal to significantly reduce environmental impact.
This is what Manfreight Driver, Adam, has to say when asked about his experience with the CNG Unit -
What was your first impressions with the Scania CNG Truck?
"All really positive, I previously drove an S500 and there was very little difference. Everything is the same - just the only difference being the CNG tanks in place of diesel tanks. It was quieter than the diesel truck when running too."
How did you find refuelling the vehicle?
"Very easy - there is a gauge both on the dash and outside the vehicle. There are 11 sites in England, 1 in Scotland and 1 in Wales. I was averaging 320 - 360 miles per tank."
Would you be happy to drive a CNG Truck on a regular basis?
"Absolutely! I enjoyed my time driving this demonstrator and have no complaints from my time driving the CNG Truck. I think with further investment in more refuelling sites across the country, it would be great to see more of the fleet run on CNG."
